Steve grew up working construction alongside his father in northern Alberta, learning the skills necessary for the trade and the importance of a strong work ethic. After proving his own success in envisioning and developing businesses across the province, Steve founded North Star Contracting in 1998. His executive leadership and strategic planning have built North Star into a complete service construction company proficient of any sized project. Steve’s specialized expertise in project management, site development, water and sewage development, excavation, and commercial construction has enabled North Start to bid and execute multi-million dollar projects with ease.
Dale Hull
Chief Estimator
Dale got his start in the heavy civil world roughly 16 years ago, completing fieldwork while paying his way through university. After graduating, Dale moved his career from field operations to estimating and project management. Dale was fortunate to work under arguably one of Calgary’s finest deep utility and heavy civil estimators; taking away invaluable lessons and learning opportunities.
Scott Price
CA, CFA, Chief Finance Officer
Scott has almost 30 years of experience working in the finance world and over 10 years of experience as a finance executive in the construction industry. Scott has a proven track record in defining, documenting, communicating and implementing the strategic vision of the company. Scott is responsible for all Finance, Administrative, HR, and IT functions in the company. He also has the experience and contributes to the operations of the company. His ability in helping companies develop and implement governance policies, corporate controls, as well as increasing efficiencies and reducing costs is what makes him a valuable member of the North Star team.
Craig Meadus
Senior Project Manager
Craig has over 18 years of experience in Civil Construction. He started his career with Lafarge. At Lafarge he was exposed to estimating and project management. For the next 4 years Craig remained within Lafarge but with a blind trust called Pro-Con Road Works as Chief Estimator / Senior Project Manager. From there Craig moved into a General Manager role with Trotter & Morton’s Bluebird Contracting Services. Partnerships in industry lead Craig to the General Managers position within Aecon Transportation West. Next Craig moved his family to the lower mainland (BC) for a Sales & Marketing Manager position with Mainland Construction Materials. In all Craigs roles he had fostered and lead project and estimating teams to significant growth but developing reliable and consistent process. Craig has always focused on meaningful relationships with all shareholders within our industry.
Jacob Wiens
Operations Manager
Jacob has over 15 years of experience in the civil engineering discipline. Jacob started his career with H&M Excavating learning the business from the ground up starting as a labourer and moving into a lead hand role. Jacob’s knowledge of the multiple disciplines of civil construction that he has gained from his hands-on experience, in addition to the technical knowledge he gained from graduating with a diploma in civil engineering technology has benefited him greatly with his transition in 2014 to project manager. Jacob has experience in managing various commercial, City of Calgary, and community development projects varying in size and scope from $1m to over $20m in value.
Kyle Murdoch
Maintenance Manager
Kyle started his career in the heavy equipment maintenance industry with SMS Equipment Inc. Kyle completed his education at SAIT for both on-road and off-road Heavy Equipment Technician. Kyle spent 13 years with SMS Equipment, starting as a labourer and working his way to become a superintendent for the Suncor Oil Sands Trucking division supporting warranty, autonomous operations & customer support for their fleet of 400 tonne Komatsu haul trucks. In early 2022, Kyle made the transition back to the construction industry with North Star Contracting Inc, supporting internal fleet maintenance & repairs. Kyle’s experience dealing with external customers such as those in the mining industry, allow him to thrive when working internally with each business unit and their equipment requirements.
